A Scrappy Courthouse Steps Quilt

Hellooo! I finally have some photos of my scrappy courthouse steps quilt to share with you. Hooray! This quilt has been really popular with my family over the winter months. Mainly because it’s big and it’s backed in flannel. It turns out my family don’t care at all what a quilt looks like so long as it’s big and it’s warm. That’s a little disappointing to be honest but don’t worry it won’t stop me from spending most of my sewing time making sure the front looks pretty.

I’m really pleased to say that this quilt was made entirely from my scrap drawer. My scraps are made up of two types of fabrics… fabrics I love and can’t bear to part with but are too small to fold and keep with my fat quarters, or larger pieces that I just don’t love anymore. This pattern is perfect for both of these scrap types, the small pieces get put to use rather than tucked away and the larger pieces get cut into small strips. And somehow, when I look at this quilt it’s the fabrics I love that jump out at me. Can you spot the Denyse Schmidt blue tiles in the photo below? Hint, it’s the largest piece on the right hand side. I used my very last tiny strip of it in this quilt. I’m so sad to see it go but it’s good to use it in one last quilt.

What I learnt from making this quilt;

• Courthouse Steps are super fun. See my previous post for info on different layout options. I definitely want to make more scrappy courthouse steps quilts (I certainly have enough scraps to make more of these quilts).
• Cutting scraps into 1 1/2″ strips takes forever!
• Using flannel to back my quilts will ensure they are enduringly popular with my family, regardless of what the front looks like.
• Seeing my children snuggled under my quilts is very rewarding… even if said children are on their devices when they shouldn’t be.
• I love blue. And scrappy.

• Blocks are 7″ square finished

• Backing: Dear Stella Moonscape flannel in Endive
• Binding; mostly Carolyn Friedlander Architextures
• Quilting Design: Figure 8 pattern
